Speaking the local language when travelling is a good way to integrate into the population and learn new things! It's always pleasant when a holidaymaker makes the effort to speak Portuguese and moreover, it increases your chances of making nice encounters. Portuguese sounds like a mixture of Spanish and other languages but can seem difficult to understand and speak at first hearing.
